Who's idea was this ? How many cop/crime/criminal shows set in NYC can we have ? Adding a famous name from literary history does nothing to enhance it and seems pointless given the concept and present day setting.

Lucy Liu Joins CBS Sherlock Holmes Pilot ‘Elementary’ — as Watson

Elementary, my dear Watson? Hardly.
Lucy Liu has joined the cast of CBS’ Sherlock
Holmes-drama pilot — as Holmes’ assistant Watson. Who traditionally has
been portrayed by, you know, male actors.

With “Charlie’s Angels” star Liu in the role, Watson is being re-envisioned as Joan Watson, who lives with Holmes in modern-day New York.

Trainspotting” actor Jonny Lee Miller, who recently had a run on Showtime’s serial-killer hit “Dexter,”
will star as the legendary sleuth Holmes in the pilot, which comes via
CBS Television Studios and Timberman-Beverly Productions. (The latter is
behind the network’s current series “A Gifted Man” and
“Unforgettable.”)

Robert Doherty (“Ringer,” “Medium”) is writing and directing, with Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly also executive-producing.

TV is starting to make me yawn. And there is the the reason why...No original thinking...to start with...Just because it worked for Starbuck doesn't mean it would work for Watson...Wink

I gave it a chance...and I like (not love) it. It is not all that faithful to Sherlock Holmes. We have the British version for that. But this one plays with twists. I like Aidan Quinn as the police chief. Johnny Lee Miller is very good...he's almost like a Harry Dresden (without the magic) .Watson is the weak link but even there it provides an interesting dynamic.

I watch, it is not the best show. I would rather watch the old black and white Sherlock Holmes movie.

Basil Rathbone was delightful....but only one of many men famous for playing Holmes (especially in the theater). I generally enjoy them all. Not one of them is as good as the written stories tho.

Looks like the ratings are holding up even with the World Series going on

At 10:00 PM, ELEMENTARY (6.7/11, 10.16m), opposite the World Series, was on par with last week's deliveries averaging 2.2/06 in adults 18-49 and 3.0/07 in adults 25-54.

Probably nothing significant will happen. She'll just continue as an 'assistant'. The original never had a 'life coach'....whatever that is.....and he did okay.

I like it too. However, I think Sherlock Holmes is an interesting enough character without making him a recovering addict. But fun show and a good cast. two thumbs up

The original Sherlock Holmes was an occasional cocaine user...and he did give it up...and then sometimes relapsed. So they are not so far off with that. I am still struggling with a female Watson...only because it changes the dynamic from friendship to possible more. Still, maybe she will be his pal forever...kind of interested to see where they go with that.

from wikipedia:

Use of drugs

Holmes occasionally uses addictive drugs, especially when lacking stimulating cases. He believes the use of cocaine stimulates his brain when it is not in use. He is a habitual user of cocaine, which he injects in a seven-per-cent solution using a special syringe that he keeps in a leather case. Holmes is also an occasional user of morphine but expressed strong disapproval on visiting an opium den. These drugs were legal in late 19th-century England. Both Watson and Holmes are serial tobacco users, including cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Holmes is an expert at identifying tobacco-ash residues, having penned a monograph on the subject.

Dr. Watson strongly disapproves of his friend's cocaine habit, describing it as the detective's "only vice" and expressing concern over its possible effect on Holmes's mental health and superior intellect.[19][20] In later stories, Watson claims to have "weaned" Holmes off drugs. Even so, according to his doctor friend, Holmes remains an addict whose habit is "not dead, but merely sleeping

Oh that's interesting. I've never read the books and don't remember any drug use in the old Basil Rathbone movies. But maybe I haven't seen them all or they left it out of the script.

Back in Rathbone's day they may have glossed over it but there was a movie Called "The Seven Per Cent Solution" back in 1976 which had to do with Holmes' addiction.

There was a 2 hour season finale this week that really rocked. So many twists and turns really had me going. They took some liberties in not following how things are in the books. But I loved how his relationship with Watson has developed (it's not romantic) and altho I love the British version best of all, I must admit that this show has really grown on me. two thumbs up clap
