This is getting good reviews and did well at the box office on opening night.

Several things to know:

It is NOT a sequel to Cloverfield, J.J. Abram's 2008 production which is a cult classic.

There is no indication that it is a 'chemical attack' as it claims in the IMDB post.

There is only a "spiritual" connection to the original Cloverfield.

There is a satisfying conclusion at the end.

All of this comes straight from Mary Elizabeth Winstead who was on a talk show on Friday night. She didn't explain what the "spiritual" connection meant. scratch

She said it has a "Hitchcockian" feel to it where the tension and mystery build slowly rather than the typical "scare your pants off" horror movie.

Producer J.J. Abrams Has ‘a Bigger Plan’ In Store for His ‘Cloverfield’ Films

Though the film’s name “10 Cloverfield Lane” was revealed less than two months ago — even the cast was in the dark during filming — the movie’s unconventional and mysterious marketing campaign brought anticipation to a fever pitch at the film’s premiere in Manhattan on Wednesday evening.

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, this follow-up to 2008’s “Cloverfield” (directed by Matt Reeves) is not a sequel, but it does exist in the same universe. Or as producer J.J. Abrams puts it, they’re two different rides at the same amusement park. For one, the first “Cloverfield” film was also produced by Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and launched in a similarly tight-lipped manner.

Still, Abrams didn’t hesitate to hint at even more mystery to come, which could tie the “Cloverfield” universe together. “There is a bigger plan,” he told Variety. “It’s not just an anthology. There’s something that we’re working on. »

Saw it yesterday. While it probably won't go down in history as the best horror/SF movie of all time it does have its moments. For about the first 7/8ths of the movie it is in the "Hitchcock" vein with mystery, tension, threats, only one violent act, etc. but without any monsters, supernatural creatures, ghosts, etc. , similar to how Hitchcock did it with North by Northwest, Rear Window, The Birds, etc. But then in the last 1/8th it becomes pure science fiction with a credible 'wrap up'.

"....but it does exist in the same universe. Or as producer J.J. Abrams puts it, they’re two different rides at the same amusement park."......
I'm not sure what 'existing in the same universe", means. There is no connection at all with the plot, concepts, etc. of the original Cloverfield movie. But nevertheless it stands on its own as a worthwhile contribution to the genre.
