A Princess of Mars
This will be SyFy's Saturday night movie. A change from their usual "Monster of the Week". You will recognize it as the first book in the "John Carter of Mars" series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, wherein he meets the "exotic, dusky skinned Dejah Thoris".....nude of course although I doubt we'll be seeing that part on SyFy...... Banjo, thanks for posting this. :D I read the entire Martian Series many years ago and have been waiting for them to be made into movies. I had heard a movie was in production but wasn't aware it was already finished. Anyone who has a chance should watch this movie. I hope it is as good as the books. Maybe more will be made. I think there were eleven books in the series. Burroughs was well known for the Tarzan story but not so much for the Martian Series. I have the DVR set. Thanks again. :D

Re: A Princess of Mars
It looks like there are two movies. This one in the works:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I don't know anything about Lynn Collins but she looks like a reasonable Dejah Thoris.... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
And this one which went straight to DVD and will be the one on SyFy:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Traci Lords as Dejah Thoris ?? A blond ?? C'mon ! She should have been Moon Bloodgood or even Marsha Thomason.
Of course Frank Frazetta has his own idea of what John and Dejah and Tars Tarkis looks like..... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Of course if they really, really wanted to cast the ultimate Dejah Thoris they could do no better than the Australian supermodel Naomi Hilton.
I don't know if she can act, but does it matter ? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: A Princess of Mars
Banjo ... you 'hooked' me on this one.
When John Carter first gets captured by Tars Tarkus, the scene had a double-pointed rock outcropping in the background that looked eerily similar to the birthplace of our Roswellian pod people.
I just saw SyFy's rerun of The Tommyknockers, and think that Traci Lord's acting has improved over that 16-year interval. But, I think that Antonio Sabato did a much better acting performance.
I gave the movie one star (like kissing your sister).

Oh,yes, that was the famous Vasquez Rocks all right. When my husband saw that he said "So, they're not on Mars??"

Re: A Princess of Mars
Yikes ! Sorry I roped so many innocent bystanders into that turkey. "Acting" is not a word I would apply to any of the unfortunates who are wondering how to get that off their film-ographies.. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
The best thing I can say about it is that they got more mileage out of the Vasquez Rocks scenes than most productions. But they didn't have any coconut/pineapple pie, I guarantee you..... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: A Princess of Mars
That's OK Banjo. I just 'vegged-out' and enjoyed all the gross things that John Carter ate. One looked like vanilla yogurt! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Loved Berry's comment "So, they're not on Mars??" [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Not all your fault Banjo. Craig had read the entire works of Burroughs while he was in college so he wanted to watch it. I have never been a Burroughs fan but was game.Banjo wrote:Yikes ! So, funny Ben should say "so, they're not on Mars?" When they showed Vasquez Rocks. I said to Craig..."I've climbed up that rock." And he retorted, "So, you've been to Mars..." [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
I have to agree they did get a lot of usage out of the park....but we got great coconut/pineapple pie...so we win.. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Re: A Princess of Mars
Well, I watched the recording on Monday. Not much there except it was good to see the rocks. I would compare the effort to a high school video class production but that would be an insult to the students. _O_WELL, maybe the next one will be better.
