Super 8
Why JJ Abrams (writer/director) decided to name his Sci-Fi/Thriller movie after a hotel chain I have no idea. The movie takes place in the late 70's and they did a great job with the look, feel and music of the era. The movie revolves around a group of young teenagers making their own B zombie movie for an upcoming film festival. They sneak out late one night to film more scenes for their movie and witness something they should not have seen. Super 8 is a very enjoyable movie. The writing, acting and directing are all very solid. I was impressed with the young leads Joel Courtney & Elle Fanning (Dakota Fanning's younger sister) and several others. Super 8 has plenty of action and grit for a PG-13 movie. It also has a great "Stand By Me" buddy coming of age feel to it. The film is funny, entertain, realistic and suspenseful enough to keep your attention which makes it a cut above your average your average summer blockbuster. It must be somewhat auto-biographical as Abrams was born in '66 and would have been a young teen in the late 70's. Well done Mr. Abrams!

Re: Super 8
Glad to hear your good review. I haven't seen it but may do so now. I think the name comes from the kids using a Super 8 mm camera to shoot their movie. That was the standard home/amateur camera before camcorders. Elle Fanning was on Leno a few weeks ago plugging it. She has that same "spark of genius" as her sister.

Rusty, you didn't really mean that did you?
Banjo, I think of all movies out this summer, this is the one to see.

Re: Super 8
*sigh* That's later on, Mr. Difficult. :P (July 29th, counting the days here.)
I also would've added Midnight in Paris, but I'm not sure it's either your or Rusty's kind of thing.
What I do know from our blu/goof friends over at FB there's a consensus on Super 8...(why do I keep typing Super*) which is all in the oh! that was so so so so very very very good!

Re: Super 8
Thanks for the review Rus. Now if I can just talk Craig into taking me to see it. He does not want to get out in the heat...can't blame him but I can't stay at home ALL the time...
I'm looking forward to Cowboy's and Aliens too. Sure wish we had a Star Trek movie to see this summer...

Marina Sirtis and LeVar Burton were in town yesterday. I guess that's as close to a new Star Trek movie as we're likely to get.

Wow, do you know why they were in town?
Re: Super 8
They had a big Comic-Con at the convention center. I didn't go but of course the news reporter sought out the most geekish looking attendees to interview. She interviewed Sirtis and Burton too and they were happy to be there and meet the fans. Their fee for attending probably contributed to their happiness. :P

Re: Super 8
My daughter saw Super 8 and said it was very good! Will have to go by myself though. Larry won't go see a scifi movie with me!

Re: Super 8
Finally saw it tonight. I liked it a lot. Jake had scared me off by saying "It's no E.T." but it was highly entertaining and not too scary for me. So it gets a big from me. I thought the teenage girl was especially good in this.

She's Dakota Fanning lil sis. I think her name is Emma? I thought she was great as well. I think we may see a lot of her in the future.
