The reason I bring this up at this late date is because it plays constantly on cable, just about every network that shows movies. Last night it was on SyFy. I'm wondering if one reason for its popularity, aside from being one of Stephen King's better creations, is that Frank Darabont wrote the screen play and directed it. He also created The Walking Dead and was the show runner on the 1st season but then left. Several of his casting choices on TWD were Laurie Holden and Melissa McBride which he cast in The Mist. Of course Bill Sadler is in it also as well as other well known actors. So TWD fans may like The Mist too because it reminds them of TWD in some respects while having that good old tragic ending so beloved by King.
