Meet the Castaways on 'Survivor: San Juan del Sur -- Blood vs. Water'
Here are the 18 all-new castaways and their loved ones competing in season 29, Survivor: San Juan del Sur -- Blood vs. Water, which premieres with a 90-minute episode on Wednesday, September 24 at 8pm on CBS. This season will also see the return of Exile Island.
By Jeff Dodge

Looks like fairly typical bunch, a father /son ,  father / daughter, sweethearts, two gay guys, ex-athletes and girlfriends,  and now the infamous Anderson twins. Oh Lordy !  Rolling Eyes Annoying enough on the Amazing Race, twice, what will they be like when they have to sleep outside and get muddy ?

Incidentally, it was nice to see The Amazing Race get the Emmy for best reality show. It would have been better
if they had been competing with actual reality shows rather than performance competitions. And a cooking show ? scratch tongue C'mon you people..... Rolling Eyes

The TVGN Channel had an hour review last night of the upcoming season with background info on all the contestants and Jeff's analysis of each one's chances. As far as can be told this early, there are no out-and-out deliberately annoying contestants this season. That may be naive on my part but after 28 seasons we can usually spot that potential even before the first episode.  Jeff didn't hint at any such qualities in his analysis, understandable since it would "taint" those contestants perhaps unfairly.

But at any rate by the end of the first episode such qualities will be obvious to all viewers and the other contestants. And then starts the task, surprising difficult in some cases, to boot them. Although this has been achieved at the first Tribal Council in many seasons, the bootee storming off, highly offended, other times sneaking out quietly in inward acknowledgement of their own incompetence.

This season with a twist on the "Blood vs. Water" concept from two seasons ago, each pair member (siblings, parent/child, gay partner/spouses/lovers/ etc. will be put in separate tribes right at the start forcing them to compete against each other immediately. This is different than the previous B vs. W where the partners were in the same tribe and worked to protect each other.

Even as a Powerful and Influential Member of the Viewer Class I can't definitively predict, even after careful attention to their "back stories" from last night's show, who will be "the annoying one". If I had to guess I'd say the female cop married to the firefighter. She has stated that she will keep her job a secret, sometimes a tip-off to future behavior but more often that quality is revealed through whining and complaining about conditions and other contestants unwillingness to cater to the 'whiners' wishes.

Of all the reality shows Survivor requires the most careful attention to detail on the part of the viewer in order to understand the strategic and tactical decisions made week to week by the contestants because they impact the voting of the other contestants at each of the Tribal Councils held every 3 days. The performances of anyone in the competitions can bear on how they are viewed at TC time but is not as certain  as to their potential elimination compared to Big Brother where competition winners are clear cut and save them outright from elimination at least for that week.
