After watching 2 episodes I agree with the reviewers that it attempts to be another Modern Family but falls short. One of its self imposed limitations is that it has to include approximately equal segments for all the family members. In the 22 minutes available that means only 5-6 minutes per segments which are not related to each other.
I don't have straight all the relationships between the characters; brothers/sisters/parents/in-laws , etc. but some are funnier than others and some are boring. Betsy Brandt's role (Hank's wife on Breaking Bad) is about mid-range between boring and funny.
The best segment is Colin Hanks and Zoe Lister-Jones as his wife and new parents. Their life has become a living hell since the baby arrived, from the delivery room scenes..."Don't look down there !"......to the sleepless nights and 3 am diaper runs.
Zoe has 'milk delivery problems' so they hire a "lactation coach" who with her brother (they thought he was her husband) prescribes a drink for Zoe consisting of "wheat grass and Japanese fish eye paste". It is a black liquid. Zoe drinks it, then throws up.
Later Colin throws his back out while helping to cut down a tree in the front yard. They fail.
Then he is seen lying on his back on the dining room floor while the family is eating spaghetti. Zoe helpfully leans down with a fork full of spaghetti to put in his mouth. She misses with 90% of it. Is all that funny ? The viewers and the ratings will be the judge.

Re: Life In Pieces
This is still worth watching and Colin Hank's segments are still the most consistently funny.
Last night was funny and interesting on several levels. In the first segment where Betsy Brant's (haven't memorized the characters names yet) teenage son brings home his first girlfriend, the whole extended family was there and all were ...shall we say....'gobsmacked' by her appearance....not to put too fine a point on it...is "statuesque'......played by this girl:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1051295/?ref_=fn_nm_nm_1
Colin's wife comes in....."I'm not standing next to her !"
Betsy says to her husband, quietly where no one can hear...."Why can't he have some little, mousy, library type ?" Then they all raise their wine glasses to toast the son's new girlfriend and Betsy says, " Here's to boobs !" , and everyone doesn't know what to say and "Clementine" (Hunter's character's name) looks a little confused. Then the grandmother pipes up, "Oh what a beautiful toast !"
But the interesting thing is that the girl, Hunter, was on Roswell in 2001 on the "Samuel Rising" episode. She must have played a very young girl. I don't remember the details on the ep. IMDB doesn't give her age but she must still be in her teens.
Okay, she's 22...don't remember her on Dexter but she's worked a lot.

Frankly, I thought that was a rather gratuitous way to end the season. Just because she's "saving herself" until marriage and her on screen boyfriend 'can't wait'....she agrees to marry a teenager and they are both still in high school ?......c'mon. She's smarter than that.....luckily in real life at least.

Both her sisters are actresses too ! That must be quite a "job" for her parents. But at least they all have their heads on straight and are successful without drama.

Good decision !
I didn't know it was the highest rated new comedy, but they lucked out on a great cast .

I don't know why she is so dead set on Thai food (never tried it myself). I think after the 2nd or 3rd failure, I'd head for KFC.....
