This sounds bizarre. There is really nothing left of Bonanza City except a few foundations. I have ridden past it ~10 years ago, it's about 40 miles north of me just east of I-25 but you have to turn off past the Pueblo Casino down a dirt road with deep sand. I can't get a map to post here...it should be reasonably easy for the production crews to get in/out after they deal with the deep sand that requires 4WD or a dirt bike to get through, but they will have to put up some sort of habitable buildings unless the kids are expected to build their own which seems unlikely...but it looks like it's already in the can, according to this article. If so, they really kept it quiet here. Usually there is some publicity surrounding any film/TV projects here, of which there are many each year, But not a peep about this...
Kids to rule reality on CBS
Show offers new take on 'Lord of the Flies'
CBS is ready to unleash a reality take on "Lord of the Flies," quietly
wrapping filming on a new skein in which a group of 8- to 15-year-olds
will create their own society.Tom Forman, showrunner on "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," is behind the 13-episode project, tentatively titled "Kid Nation." Eye
is expected to unveil the show Wednesday at its upfront presentation.
It's unclear if "Kids' Nation" will land on the fall sked, but it
wouldn't be surprising if it did. Project was originally pegged
for a summer debut but was held for the 2007-08 season after CBS execs
became excited about its breakout potential. Eye's other reality
staples -- "Survivor" and "Amazing Race" -- have been greenlit for two
cycles and one cycle, respectively.CBS reality guru Ghen Maynard
has been feverishly working on nearly two dozen unscripted concepts for
the Eye and cousin net the CW. With "Survivor" and "Amazing
Race" both aging, execs at CBS have made finding the next big reality
hit a huge priority. Effort begins in earnest later this month with
"Pirate Master," premiering on the same date "Survivor" originally
bowed. As for "Kid Nation," skein will follow 40 kids for 40 days, observing them as they attempt to build a new society from scratch.Rather
than surviving on an island, the kiddies relocated to Bonanza City,
N.M., a ghost town abandoned more than a century ago. Prodigal children
live without parental supervision and modern comforts.Goal for
the kids is to build a functional society. They have to pass laws,
choose leaders and build an economy. People familiar with the project
said the kids may also be given choices between things they need (food
and supplies) and things they want (think Nintendo Wii).Unlike most reality shows, there will be no mandated eliminations. Kids can go home when they want to.Rather
than weekly exits, each seg will end with a feel-good moment in which
one kid is selected by his peers to earn a major reward.CBS
brass have kept the project quiet in part out of fear that the idea of
the project -- kids living sans parents -- could kick up a media frenzy
and threaten production before it began. By wrapping the show before
its announcement, net will now be able to show off clips and perhaps
quash some pre-broadcast controversy.Eye also wanted to avoid
giving potential copycats too many details about the project, mindful
of many past cases in which rivals have ripped off each other's
concepts. "Kid Nation" is being produced via Tom Forman Prods.
and Good TV Inc. Eye execs declined comment. Forman, who's repped by
CAA, inked a multiyear overall deal with CBS Par Network Television
last year (Daily Variety, March 30, 2006).

Re: CBS's new schedule
So far none of the "new" shows out for ABC, CBS or NBC have excited me any!
I am in a delima for Thursday nights ... there are 3 shows on at 9:00 that I want to watch!!! I guess I am going to have to get TVO or something! NBC is moving "The Office" to 9pm, although that is only a 1/2 hour show but then there is CSI and Grey's Anatomy!!! :suspect: If ABC continues to show GA on Friday's too I may still be able to handle it though ....

Re: CBS's new schedule
Garnet had the same "problem" on Goof. Here's my advice to her:
This is my plan for Thursday night, and I have only a modest (and
8+ year old) VCR ....your times seem to be an hour later but the
principal is the same:
1. Watch The Office live, 7-8 pm (special 1 hr. season finale.)
2. Tape Scrubs (special 1 hr. etc.) and ER from 8-10 pm.
3. Watch Grey's Anatomy live, 8-9+ pm.
4.
Watch Lost live, 9:07-10 pm.....I'm a leetle suspicious of this. It may
be another one of those "compilation" things that they did last
season/last fall, instead of just calling it a collection of repeat
clips. Or, ideally it would be the writers/creators coming on and
explaining some of the mysteries and/or the future path. Don't hold
your breath on that.
I admit that this plan doesn't allow for seeing Lana tell Lex that the marriage is over (oh the horror ! ), but you can rely on Trav to fill us in on that... , or you could tape it too.....7-8 pm.......
If you see any flaws in this plan let me know....

We do enjoy watching NCIS and Criminal Minds.
But you are right, it doesn't appear that this network has taken any programming chances to try to expand its viewing audience.

They claim that Moonlight is expensive to produce. Why ? Beth's earrings are real gold ?
But how can it be as expensive as Survivor or The Amazing Race ? I suppose they can charge higher advertizing rates for those shows....?

"Reality Shows" are
notoriously cheap to produce. It wouldn't surprise me if, even after all the
years they have been on the air, both Survivor & Amazing Race are able to
keep their budgets between $750,000 & 1 million per episode. Conversely, if
Moonlight was "expensive" in its first season the show might have
cost as much as 2 million per episode.
Advertising rates are determined by ratings, both overall
numbers and from the advertiser’s target audience. Unfortunately for Moonlight,
Friday night is one of the lowest rated nights of the week (many weeks Numb3rs was
the highest rated show of the night with slightly over 10 million viewers.)
Also, CBS probably expected Moonlight to grow its audience out of Ghost
Whisperer instead of losing viewers as it did.
I have no idea why CBS canceled the
show…but then I haven’t understood a number of the programming moves that they
have made in the last few years.
