The current state of Late night TV.....
I've watched part of Fallon a couple of times since he took over from Leno. One of his immediate problems is with the set. It is drab, too much brown, the background of a style-ized NYC is weird. Why not have an actual picture of NYC buildings ? The band is in the wrong place, the whole studio seems much smaller than the CA studio, it's hard to tell how much seating there is for the audience, it seems much less than in CA.
Having said all that, the only way I watch any late night talk show is to DVR it if and only if there is an interesting female guest and then fast forward to her segment. Occasionally I would watch Leno 'live' from the beginning up to the female guest's segment. This was rare. I will never do this with Fallon unless/until he has an interesting female guest, nor of course Letterman who is truly repugnant, although I will admit doing it twice when Cobie Smulders was the guest. Kimmel viewing or DVRing is very rare. Craig Ferguson has on average the most interesting female guests and the one I mostly DVR often because I don't recognize the female guest's name and am curious if I am missing something. They are often British/Aussie/Euro obscure actresses who are in equally obscure productions, but are often very worthwhile to watch. But he also has recurring appearances from well known TV actresses such as Alison Brie and Gillian Jacobs, and of course Ariel Tweto who has become something of a late night 'star' on the basis of her appearances and now gets invited to other public functions around CA, all originally based on her appearances as the daughter of Jim Tweto on Flying Wild Alaska.
