Electrical physics doomed Edison's scheme right out of the box, but his reputation at the time caused him to lobby for it for longer than otherwise, even though electrical scientists at the time knew it was totally impractical. Of course if it weren't for Tesla's invention George Westinghouse wouldn't have had a practical scheme to present either. He paid Tesla only $2 million for the rights, which seemed a lot at the time, but is such an infinitesimal amount compared to what it brought to the world.
