Those were a couple of physically brutal Immunity challenges, more so than typical even for early season challenges. Later on of course they have to reduce the difficulties as the lack of adequate food over the weeks wears down the contestants. It looks like the early strategy will be to try to vote out the people deemed most dangerous in the challenges.
